Argentine singer/songwriter Claudia Brant’s discography reads like a who’s who of Latin pop superstars, including Thalia, Reik, Laura Paolini, Paulina Rubio, Jennifer Lopez, and many others. Back in 2008 she wrote a smash single for Luis Fonsi, “No Me Doy Por Vencido”; she reimagines the song on her latest album, Manuscrito. Unlike Fonsi’s version, which has shades of alt-rock in the crescendos, Brant’s take is lighter and more understated. Sometimes a spare cello accompaniment and a few piano riffs is all it takes to make a powerful point.

His latest solo single, “Nada haces por mí,” belies its booming bass-clap punch with twinkling sonic stalactites, as a new wave bass line rings against a gorgeous chillwave melody.

In many ways, Andrea Echeverri is the face of the GRAMMY®-nominated Colombian rock outfit Aterciopelados. Dos, her second solo album is a continuation of the feminist masterpiece that characterized her 2005 debut. She sings about environmentalism and a shared planet on the sparkling cumbia inflected “Madre Naturalaza.” An aspirated rhythm sets the tempo just before waves of acoustic guitars come undulating over the organic track.

Heaped with praise by NPR, Rolling Stone, and MTV, Chilean singer/songwriter Francisca Valenzuela has enjoyed ample critical and commercial success for her gold 2007 debut, Muérdete la Lengua. “Qué Sería,” from her second album, Buen Soldado, is far less new wave than the songs from her debut; it sounds like a ’70s piano-rock ditty as she ponders the pros of a painful love affair.
