JotDog - Lluvia de Estrellas

Each week we find a track from an artist or a band we’ve been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Canciòn de la Semana. Mexican synth-pop duo Jotdog is singer Maria Barracuda and the illustrious producer Jorge Amaro, whose discography includes collaborations with Maná, Timbiriche, and many others. Set to a hyper-melodic synthesizer track beautified with chiptune doodads, “Lluvia de Estrellas” relies on metaphors of space and stardust to convey all-encompassing, unconditional romantic love.

Paulina Rubio - Me Gustas Tanto (feat. 3BallMTY) [3BallMTY Remix]

Each week we find a track from an artist or band we’ve been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Canciòn de la Semana. Sophisticated Latin pop queen Paulina Rubio and the upstart teenage trio 3BallMTY may be a surprising collaboration. But as “Me Gustas Tanto” demonstrates, it’s a match made in dance music heaven. 3BallMTY brings its innovative underground genre—tribal guarachero, with a frenetic electronic loop of ethnic drums—to the polish and glamour of Rubio’s upbeat pop sound.

Jesse & Joy - Quiero Que Me Quieras

Each week we find a track from an artist or a band we’ve been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Canción de la Semana. These siblings stormed the scene with their 2006 debut, Esta Es Mi Vida, brimming with Joy’s commanding vocals and Jesse’s instrumental arsenal (piano, drums, guitar). Since then, they’ve earned a Latin GRAMMY® for Best New Artist and progressively honed their sound — a warm and energetic blend of pop, rock, and folk. This track comes from their latest album, ¿Con Quién Se Queda el Perro?.

Claudia Brant - No Me Doy Por Vencido

Each week we find a track from an artist or band we’ve been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Canciòn de la Semana. Argentine singer/songwriter Claudia Brant’s discography reads like a who’s who of Latin pop superstars, including Thalia, Reik, Laura Paolini, Paulina Rubio, Jennifer Lopez, and many others. Back in 2008 she wrote a smash single for Luis Fonsi, “No Me Doy Por Vencido”; she reimagines the song on her latest album, Manuscrito. Unlike Fonsi’s version, which has shades of alt-rock in the crescendos, Brant’s take is lighter and more understated. Sometimes a spare cello accompaniment and a few piano riffs is all it takes to make a powerful point.

Daniel Santacruz - Cuando un Hombre Se Enamora

Each week we find a track from an artist or band we’ve been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Canciòn de la Semana. Daniel Santacruz may be New Jersey–born, but as a child, he and his family relocated to the Dominican Republic, where he fell in love with the sights and sounds of merengue and other forms of Dominican music. A gorgeous bachata masterpiece, “Cuando un Hombre Se Enamora” highlights Santacruz’s exquisite vocal versatility, caressing resonant low notes one moment and reaching for peaks the next, effortlessly. It’s no wonder that his album Bachata Stereo was nominated for a Latin GRAMMY® for Best Contemporary Tropical Album.

Manuela Mejia - Las Palabras

Each week we find a track from an artist or band we’ve been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Canciòn de la Semana. Dulcet-voiced singer/songwriter Manuela Mejia was born in Medellín, Colombia. At 18, she headed north to Miami to study music and record commercial jingles. Her mellow, electronic-tinged compositions recall the work of Paty Cantú. Sensual and futuristic, “Las Palabras” pulses to electric guitar utterances, space-age synthesizers, and artfully arranged lyrics of seduction.

Juan Carlos Lozano - Nada Haces por Mí

Each week we find a track from an artist or band we’ve been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Canciòn de la Semana. In many ways, Juan Carlos Lozano is like the Bernard Sumner of Mexican synth-pop. Like Sumner, Lozano was a founding member of two pivotal bands; Lozano’s were Moenia and Morbo. His latest solo single, “Nada haces por mí,” belies its booming bass-clap punch with twinkling sonic stalactites, as a new wave bass line rings against a gorgeous chillwave melody.

Andrea Echeverri - Madre Naturaleza

Each week we find a track from an artist or a band we’ve been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Canciòn de la Semana. In many ways, Andrea Echeverri is the face of the GRAMMY®-nominated Colombian rock outfit Aterciopelados. Dos, her second solo album is a continuation of the feminist masterpiece that characterized her 2005 debut. She sings about environmentalism and a shared planet on the sparkling cumbia inflected “Madre Naturalaza.” An aspirated rhythm sets the tempo just before waves of acoustic guitars come undulating over the organic track.

Francisca Valenzuela – Qué Sería

Francisca Valenzuela - Qué Sería

Heaped with praise by NPR, Rolling Stone, and MTV, Chilean singer/songwriter Francisca Valenzuela has enjoyed ample critical and commercial success for her gold 2007 debut, Muérdete la Lengua. “Qué Sería,” from her second album, Buen Soldado, is far less new wave than the songs from her debut; it sounds like a ’70s piano-rock ditty as she ponders the pros of a painful love affair.
