Each week we find a track from an artist or a band we’ve been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. It doesn’t get more primal than guitar/bass/drums and the Virginmarys elevate the holy triumvirate and attack their instruments like hungry bears stumbling upon on a fresh carcass. “Bang Bang Bang” is like a cosmic collaboration of Humble Pie and Wolfmother — all gnashing guitar and bass, cymbal crashes, and sweaty, fly-away hair (facial and otherwise) swishing from side to side. Slash digs ‘em, so should you. “Bang Bang Bang” appears on the Virginmarys’ Cast the First Stone EP.

In lieu of our regular Discovery Download, we’re presenting a Rediscovery Download – in which we give an artist you may be familiar with another listen. Brad has been around since the early ‘90s, but if you’re not yet hip to the band’s rocking ways, you probably know one of its illustrious members: Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard. Although the cohorts have shown a penchant for ‘70s-influenced hard rock throughout their careers, “Rush Hour,” is a mellower, grungy affair – a spacious, melodic jam that rides a wave of guitars until the final chord change.

When a band lists its influences as “sun, moon, air, water,” you can be sure you’re dealing with either a group of New Age healers or heavy, heavy rockers. In this case, we’re dealing with the latter. This Connecticut trio pounds out primordial sludge of the highest order. “Slow and low, that is the tempo,” as another trio once put it. Low-slung bass dirges, grooving but barely moving Black Sabbath riffs of epic proportions, and Joey Maddalena’s wastrel-like vocals combine into one monstrous package that will make you want to get in the van, pack up your BMX bikes, and drive straight into the sun. If you like the track, check out the album.
